Philosophies at War Classic Reprint Fulton J Sheen 9780243385836 Books Reviews

Although this text is marked by its placement in history, it rang with great resonance to me as I continue to consider the current state of the Western World. In the early and mid twentieth century, the world faced two wars in which the West was required to admit the fallacies of Classical Liberalism, Socialism, Marxism, and Fascism. It was a period in which the West had a chance to remove the polluting barnacles from its belly as it strove for what seemed to be a Common Good. However, as Sheen astutely points out, the question still remained to be answered, "Once we have usurped the philosophies of our enemies, what will we replace them with?"

Today, we still have not wholly answered that question, although we have in many ways continued to replace them with the very philosophies of our enemies, albeit in slow and insidious ways. The fundamental questions for the West in these days of societal turmoil are specifically those which seek the central ontological and moral Truths of our existence. In the sixty years since the cessation of World War II, we have still not completely answered them but have instead lapsed into something of a slightly directed materialism which ultimately has left us without a firm rooting in conviction. It is little wonder that the West is falling to other civilizations (be they Eastern or Islamic) which - for any philosophical weaknesses which they may have - are at least convinced of their bearing.

However, in the midst of our lack of an answer, we are devolving into a base materialism just like that which Sheen denounces in "Philosophies at War." It is a materialism which may ultimately devolve into our becoming that which the Greatest Generation fought against with such zeal and devotion. Because we still stand upon the precipice of the early twentieth century in many ways, this text is poignantly accessible even in the early twenty-first century. Sheen's analysis is thoughtful, eloquently presented, and filled with copious references. This text comes with high recommendations from this reviewer.
This book is FANTASTIC!! Some Quick Facts Philosophies at War was written in 1943 by Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Contrary to the information above it is 200 pages. It was originally Published by Charles Scribner and Sons.

It predates the the D-day invasion, the A-Bomb, and the United Nations. It is a fascinating books for its socio-political and religious and historical commentary and insight.

The Archbishop comments on the Failures of political/ideological systems of Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, and Western Democracies!

He makes a strong case for the triumph of Democracy and the ultimate failure of the Systems based on Race (Germany), Power(Italy), Dynasty(Japan), and Communism(Russia). But he contrasts their failings with what he calls the "Barnacles on the ship of Democracy."

He outlines 5 ills of the American Democracy of 1943 that need to be shaken for America and the West to survive into the future. He describes an external barbarism and an internal barbarism both of which threaten the Democracy and the Freedom of Man.

He outlines the following ills

1. The superstition of Progress - idea that the future will be better than the past. (He says that a prosperous future is not guaranteed.)
2. The cult of Scientism - idea thatScience will solve our problems. (He says that science cannot explain a mother's love.)
3. The superstition of Relativism - idea that it does not matter what you believe. (He says rightfully that Hitler's Germany proves that we must take a side or lose all.)
4. The superstition of Materialism - the idea that Man has no soul and is just an animal species. (He proposes that Man is unique possessing an intellect and will. He quotes the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
5. The Superstition of License - the idea that I am free to do whatever I want without restraint. (He proposes that our Democracy was founded on Freedom governed by law.) Each individual will impose their freedom on others to the point of chaos and conflict when carried out to its final end.

He speaks also of the failure of educators and philosophers to embrace the foundation of free society, that a moral law ground in freedoms of Religion has been the basis for Democracy and that a shift toward secularism will ultimately unravel democracy and pave the way for TOTALITARIANISM!

I am sad and disappointed that this book is out of print. It would make a great addition to any liberal arts education. I also would love to see a publisher pick it up and turn it into an audio book.

Finally, we have the hindsight of 65 years since its publishing. Reading it in 2008, I marvel at how accurate and prophetic the Archbishop was in his understanding of what might befall us. In many cases, he was right. So right that I pray we correct our course in order to avoid the consequences of a loss of our freedoms. The external barbarism is defeated but the internal struggle for the individual and the nation continues.
