Carmen French Edition eBook Prosper Mérimée

I'm a huge, huge fan of the opera by Georges Bizet and had never been tempted to read Merimee's novella. but I was in the middle of translating a Japanese manga on the subject and realized that the author had relied at least in part on Merimee as her source, so I ordered this baby up and zipped right through it. I was extremely pleased. Even though it departs from the opera (or rather, the opera departed from Merimee's story) in many details, I found the story fresh and exciting. Carmen is a much more complex and vital character in the book (though she's quite vital in the opera!) This is definitely worth a read. If you can read French, this is a steal of a deal. But if you can't, you owe it to yourself to find it in translation.

Carmen French Edition eBook Prosper Mérimée Reviews

Nice
Excellent
Worthy of opera. I'd forgotten that Carmen was a Basque gypsy. Excellent. A great read for beginning French students. After the novel ends, there's a chapter on European gypsy history.
A tragedy. I think I will have to read it again. The first reading was like walking through a scenic town that someone else had shown me pictures of. The next time I can forget the pictures and enjoy the reality.
The setting is perfect for a novel about adventure and romance. The protagonist is a Gypsy woman from southern Spain who has a devil-may-care attitude about life. She lives for the pleasures that life provides, but it not attached to material wealth other than that which she needs for her day-to-day existence. Her fatalist outlook about José ultimately killing her turns out to be true. But she never relents in here refusal to submit to José's wishes to domesticate her by escaping to America with her. Carmencita will always be free, she says, and she lives her life according to that precept.
It is amazing to trace the Carmen story from which Bizet got the idea to write his most celebrated opéra Carmen. Although less complex a story told in the first person Mérimée's description of the gypsy girl is memorable . One wonders if Gautier's poem also called Carmen, published a few years later was influenced by Mérimée's. Opera's
Car men's picked more for their voice quality did not always conform to the descriptions. The closest I remember was
Julia Migenes Johnson. Tracking the origins for Opers is fun eg Victor Hugo for Rigoletto, or Beaumarchais for Mozart's
Le Nozze di Figaro. Jolyon Tucker
